There’s the beloved image of Gilda Radner: fearless, passionate, iconic. And then there are shades of Radner the public wasn’t privileged to know, beyond her beloved characters on Saturday Night Live: the Radner who struggled with success, fame, relationships, and with ovarian cancer. In LOVE, GILDA, director Lisa D’Apolito uses rare personal recordings and journal entries to tell Radner’s story in her own words. Friends and admirers, including Amy Poehler, Cecily Strong, Lorne Michaels, and a host of others, offer their most cherished memories of this brilliant trailblazer. What results is a touching tribute to and a fascinating contemplation of the comedian’s enduring cultural impact.

WHEN LAMBS BECOME LIONS
Monday, September 24
7:00pm Theatre Three, Main Street,
Historic Pt Jefferson Village
Guest Speaker: Jon Kasbe, Director
In a Kenyan town bordering wildlife conservation land, two men try to hold onto their increasingly fragile status quo. A small-time ivory dealer fights to stay on top while forces mobilize to destroy his trade. When he turns to his younger cousin, a conflicted wildlife ranger who hasn’t been paid in months, they both see a possible lifeline. The plummeting elephant population in Africa has captured the attention of the world. And as the government cracks down, the poachers face their own existential crisis. For them, conservationists are not only winning their campaign to value elephant life over its ivory, but over human life as well. Who are these hunters who will risk death, arrest and the moral outrage of the world to provide for their families? Director Jon Kasbe followed the film’s subjects over a three-year period, gaining an extraordinary level of access and trust as he became part of their everyday lives. The result is a rare and visually arresting look through the perspectives and motives of the people at the epicenter of the conservation divide.

ROLL RED ROLL
Monday, October 1
7:00pm Theatre Three, Main Street,
Historic Pt Jefferson Village
Guest Speaker: Nancy Schwartzman, Director
In small-town Steubenville, Ohio, at a pre-season football party, a horrible incident took place. What transpired would garner national attention. As amateur crime blogger Alex Goddard uncovers disturbing evidence on Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter documenting the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team, questions arise around the collusion of teen and adult bystanders. ROLL RED ROLL explores the complex motivations of both perpetrators and bystanders to unearth the attitudes at the core of their behavior. The Steubenville story acts as a cautionary tale of what can happen when adults look the other way and deny that rape culture exists. With unprecedented access to police documents, exhibits and evidence, the documentary feature unflinchingly asks: “Why didn’t anyone stop it?”

Nothing defined the disco era and debauchery in the late 70’s in New York more than the legendary night club, Studio 54. In its infamous heyday, celebrities, socialites, the straight, gay and the beautiful danced, drank, got high, and, most importantly, got seen. It was where the underground became mainstream, where inhibitions were left at the door, and what happened inside Studio 54 mostly stayed inside Studio 54. Located at West 54th Street, a then-seedy part of town, Studio 54 was the brainchild of Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, two college buddy entrepreneurs from Brooklyn who, over the course of 33 months, became the kings of New York — and then lost it all due to greed. With unprecedented access to Ian Schrager, the normally reclusive, co-owner of Studio 54, the other being the more outgoing Steve Rubell, who died of complications from AIDS in 1989, we hear the whole unvarnished story for the first time. With a treasure-trove of rare footage, celebrity interviews, a glorious portrait of a disco-era phenomenon the film takes the audience past the red velvet ropes, recalling an unforgettable place in an unforgettable time.
For your enjoyment, pre-screening music will be provided by The Marc & Myra Show – Studio 54 Radio: SiriusXM
